Do Canadian Universities & Colleges Accept Intermediate Graduates?

Intermediate study in canadaWhat place do Intermediate graduates of Pakistan’s Higher Secondary School system have in Canada’s post-secondary education system?  Can a student with an Intermediate Certificate study in Canada?  The answer is yes; but let us look at what education systems Canadian universities and colleges recognise:

American High School System – this is an accepted system that must be supplemented with AP courses and sometimes SAT Math 2 exams.  The American system does not fully equate to the Canadian High School system.

AP System – This is a recognised system for studying in Canada.  If you need Math for Engineering or Sciences, you may have to write the SAT Math exams.  Please make sure to check out the college or university websites to confirm if you need to write the SAT exam.

For the above 2 systems, students may or may not be exempt from writing the IELTS exam depending on supporting English Language Proficiency documents.

Cambridge (GCSE) System – Most international students studying in Canada have taken the Cambridge system and done their O levels and A levels.  These are highly recognised but not as well understood as the National system (AKA Intermediate) as very few schools in Canada offer the British curriculum.  A student who wants to study in Canada should have a combination of B and A marks in their O and A level courses.

If students have taken O Level English literature and received a grade of B or better, they do not have to write the IELTS exam

Intermediate – Pakistan’s national system is an easily understood system for Canadian universities and colleges as it parallels the Matriculation system used in the majority of public schools in Canada.  Canadian students study for 12 years  as do Pakistani students so as long as you have taken the right courses for your chosen program to study in Canada, and you have a minimum of 75% (depending on the program), you will qualify for most Canadian diploma and degree programs.

NOTE:  Intermediate student will have to take the IELTS Academic Exam.

Of course other systems may be recognised as well, but these are the most popular ones that Canadian institutions will consider.

Confirmed: Diploma Students Do Get Visas

Chef study in canadaContrary to popular belief, Pakistani students who wish to study in a diploma program in Canada do get their student visas.

The rumour spread is that the Canadian government does not issue student visas to Pakistani students who have been admitted to a diploma program at a college in Canada.  Well this is simply not true.

As a Canadian I couldn’t understand this statement so I decided it was time to conduct my own research.  I contacted a number of colleges in Canada to find out if they had any international students from Pakistan enrolled in their diploma programs.

The response I got was what I had expected, that indeed Canada issues study permits to Pakistani students who have been admitted to diploma programs.  The only conclusion to this is that if a Pakistani student is actively taking classes in a diploma program in a Canadian university, then the Canadian government is issuing study visas to Pakistani diploma students.

The evidence is as follows:

  • Technical diplomas – students are granted visas for various technical, mechanical diploma programs
  • Business diplomas – Business, human resources and related disciplines all have Pakistani students taking classes

That doesn’t say that other diplomas, such as child care, addiction treatment and other disciplines will not be considered by the Canadian government.  If they grant visas for one kind of diploma, they are granting visas for other disciplines as well.

So all you students who would like to pursue a diploma or post graduate diploma can continue to follow their dream.  Colleges like Douglas College on the west coast has a good array of diploma programs and associate degrees which are eligible for credit transfer into full degree programs.  Georgian College in Ontario is a great college for business diplomas, polytechnic diplomas and they even grant some degrees.  At both colleges students can study in Co-op programs which gives them work experience and an income while getting credit at the same time.

Of course there are many other colleges that are recognised by the Canadian government. If you would like to pursue your goal of studying for a diploma in Canada, then the time is now to start looking for that perfect match.  If you would like to use our consulting services please contact us at Alberta Rose Education Centre.

What does an Admission Deadline Mean to You?

Deadline Study CanadaDon’t let a university’s admission deadline fool you into thinking you have plenty of time to register, especially if you are a graduate student who wants funding, scholarships, or simply wants to get accepted into a Canadian university or college.

Admission deadlines are certainly something that a student needs to make sure they meet; but the earlier you get your application in the better.  Some universities in Canada do not wait until the deadline to make their decision; they may make it as the applications come in.  Some universities do wait until the deadline and then take all the applicants and choose the best to fill their positions.  The problem with both scenarios, you, as the student, may not know which process the department is doing to take.

Graduate Studies is a very competitive field and if you are planning on studying in Canada, it is important to know that positions at the graduate level are limited.  Some departments may take only 5 or 10 new graduate students per year; yet they will get 100 admission applications.

If the deadline is May 1st, then don’t wait until mid-April to apply, apply in October or November when the department at the university where you want to study starts accepting applications for the Fall term.  This is even more important if you want to be considered for scholarship and funding because some scholarship deadlines are far earlier than the education institution’s deadline.  Procrastination will disappoint you.

For those who would like to use the services of a Canada only education consultant please contact Alberta Rose Education Centre for all your help.  Because they specialise in Canada only, you will get the best information and care possible.

How Limited is your Education Consultant?

Stop sign studying in canadaSome students have approached me thinking that if they use my services, I can prioritise their application to study in Canada at a university or college; or I can influence the admissions offices to grant them admission to the study program they have applied for.

There seems to be this general misconception that education consultants can positively affect the admission decision.  This is not true.  I repeatedly advise any student who wants to use my services that recruitment personal, whether they are actual agents or representatives of a university or college in Canada or working independently cannot influence the decision of the admissions officers at a Canadian university or college.

So what can an education consultant do for you?

Selection of Suitable Institutions:  The education consultant should be familiar with the different universities and colleges in Canada where a student can study.  The consultant or agent should also be knowledgeable about the programs offered, or be able to refer you to appropriate sites.  They should try to match your credentials and interests to the program that is best suited to you, the prospective international student who wants to study in Canada.

Familiarity with University Policies:  They should be able to provide information about refund, payment and registration policies, procedures, as be necessary to provide the best service to the student.

Provide application services:  Consultants can provide application services both at the graduate and undergraduate level.  Providing services for undergraduates is not as complicated as for Grad Studies.  In addition to filling in the admissions application, these services might include translation, editing and proofreading research proposals and ensuring that all entrance requirements to the university are met.  They can followup with the university if documents have been misplaced or there is some misunderstanding.

Scholarships and Funding:  Consultants should have some knowledge of the funding or scholarship opportunities available for students who wish to study in Canada at a university or college.  Again they cannot guarantee funds but they can direct the student to the resources that are available so they can apply, etc.

Auxiliary Information and Assistance:  For a student who wants to study in Canada, in addition to the application, there are so many other areas that need to be covered.  Airport pickup, housing, banking information, cost of living, etc and etc – anything that might make the transition to Canada easier; guidance in this area should be provided.  They can also advise them on work opportunities in Canada and direct them to the correct government or university sites.

Student Visa Processing:  Unless the agent is licensed by the Canadian government to provide paid for immigration services, an education consultant can only direct the student to the appropriate Citizen and Immigration Canada sites.  They can also provide translation, editing/proofreading services and ensure that the student has provided all the required documents but checking them against a checklist.  They may also have to help the student understand the requirements of the Student visa documents, explaining certain points like what is “Custodian authorisation”?  The consultant cannot charge for these services unless licensed.

Having a good education consultant can certainly work to your benefit as they are the ones that do all the research and hard work for you.  This frees up your time to concentrate on completing your current degree or doing your job.  They are there to provide the best studying in Canada services to you.

What Education Consultants Can Not Do?

Influence the Admission Decision Making Process:  Education consultants and agents for students who want to study in Canada are recruitment personnel; whether they work independently from the university or college or there is a contract in place.  They may have access to certain key personnel at the university but they do influence the admissions decision, either by having the application prioritised (although they may explain certain country constraints so the admissions officers are aware of these constraints and take them into consideration) or having the institution give admission to the student.

With this information in mind, you can now find an education consultant who will help you find a good university or college in Canada where you can study and do well in your future life.
